History of Piseco: A hermit named Alvah Dunning who listed hunting and fishing on the 1850 census spent his life on Piseco Lake. He was the inventor of the Lobb Spoon which is still used today.
History of Fall Stream: Foxey Brown (David Brennan) spent 25 years along Fall Stream as a hermit. He fled Boston in the late 1800's thinking he had killed a man. His hunting partner turned up missing in 1916 and Foxey headed South. No one knows to this day if Foxey was innocent or guilty.
History of West Lake: French Louie lived on West Lake and catered to summer sports. French Louise was a lumberjack and fond of snakes (two were named Darby and Joan). On a cold winters day Louie tramped out on snowshoes to the Brook's Hotel in Speculator and died the next day. Schools were even closed so the children could attend the ceremony and deposit a small balsam branch.
