A Winter Camping Experience

My first winter camping trip was in the Adirondacks in mid February.  The average daytime temperature was 35 degrees, and the nights possibly -10.
I awoke at 6 am and prepared a pancake breakfast.  I could feel the apprehension as I prepared for the days departure.  I'll tell you it was a breakfast of nervousness.  After breakfast, I proceeded to dress.  I donned my poly pro's and windpants, carefully placed my favorite fleece hat and grabbed my pack.  I WAS READY, OR WAS I?  I was not alone on this venture which was comforting to a certain degree, but I was still to venture into a  3 day-2 night-5 mile hike in the wilderness of the Adirondack mountains.
As I prepared for departure, I rationalized the day.  It was 40 degrees with a snow base of 3 feet, but yet still loaded the van with gear, and a team of apprehension.
During the ride to the trail head, my mind raced with apprehension, the only comfort that did cross my mind was: I am doing this with people.  I have now progressed to lone winter hikes throughout the Adirondacks, but the majority are day trex's.
Wilderness winter camping, blunt and to the point is cold. If you know the basics and what to do to stay warm it is self rewarding in itself.  You will be sleeping either in a tent or a lean-to depending on location and weather conditions, but you will experience the wilderness in a whole different way.   Once the hike is planned, arrival is meant, team is a must.  Many needs must be meant:  wood, shelter, animal safety, and water.  All must help as a team for survival.  We can insure you it will be a great time - and a memory of the Adirondack outdoors will stay with you forever, but you will work for your ultimate survival.

Consider the most remote destinations during your next vacation.
